The Room: The Musical

"I hadn't seen (or even heard of) it, but.. [752.2]"

date: September 17, 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed the epic badness of your musical version of the ROOM. I haven't reviewed your stuff before, but I've seen a couple of your Twilight/True Blood things in the past, and always had a good time despite never having seen/read anything to do with them, either.... I don't care about spoilers for things I'll likely never see.

In any event, it was interesting to see you mock a non-vampire story for once, but then I went to wikipedia and read up on the Room (which I might just havev to check out at some point thanks to this flash) and on its creator and I thus stumbled across THIS little bit of info:

"In addition, [Tommy] Wiseau plans to make a vampire film (or films),[5][6] which may be shot in Austin, Texas.[4] Wiseau has stated that he currently has two 100-page vampire scripts, and hopes to film both."

Looks like you're in for a field day soon enough. Wiseau + Vampires.... together at last! Enjoy, and keep on keepin' on.

Nothing beats a great tale of revised history unless it's a great tale of revised history with some Top Gun music added in. Oh, ClamClock, if only you had been there that fateful day. (sniff)

I've seen some epilepsy flashes today, and I've seen some good ones and some bad ones. Main thing is... I've seen SOME. Today. And... well, this one blows 'em all away.

I'll leave it at that.

Signing off, from beyond the grave, apparently....

LL - Erectin' a Dispenser

"Hahahah... ohhhh yeah, that's the stuff. [750.8]"

date: July 27, 2009

You may think it didn't turn out as funny as the concept, and that may be the case.... but it's so much funnier than 9 out of 10 youtube "TF2 characters making sexy time" type vids, so... yeah.

One thing that disappointed me, though: When I saw yourtitle in the under judgement stack tonight, I figgered your flash was gonna feature the great "Dispenser Erectin'" song from NG's own audio portal. Check it out if you haven't, maybe it'll further inspire you: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/liste n/199958

And um... yeah, more video woulda been nice, but engie/heavy voiceclip and editing-wise, it was good from start to finish. Nice trim of "incoming" to be just... well... COMING. Heh. And... neato EngieLock design. If you were to do a follow-up or remake or sequel, I'd recommend just designing a lock for all of the other 7 classes, even if they don't have speaking parts. They can always stand around in the background with looks of horror (or interest) while heavy and engie do their thang. Or run by on the way to the next capture point or something. :::shrugs::: I'd give us more to look at is all. Good job, keep the TF2 schtuff iiiiiiiiiincomin'!

L4D Short: Starring Louis

"Good L4Dy stuff, mate!"

date: July 14, 2009

Always love to see new L4D/TF2/HL2/Portal stuff on the portal. Anyway, I thought your stick style was decent (there's good stickflash and there's bad stickflash, just as with anything, of course), and I didn't even think about the fact that Louis's stick figureness was white until I read the first page of reviews from when you first submitted... all mentioning it. I DID notice Zoey was red, but how could you not notice an all-red stick suddenly appearing? Heh.

Anywho, a couple things: I know you explained in a response on the 2nd page of reviews (because I was specifically back there looking for the answer) that the reason Louis drops the M-16 is that he's out of ammo, but... based on the L4D mechanics, there's gonna be an ammo pile coming up sooner or later, so why would he throw away even an empty primary weapon? You didn't address that, but I figure either A) you were going for realism (like Valve does with their Meet the... videos... to a certain extent: see Meet the Spy's friendly fire mode being on)... or B) you wanted him to have no primary weapon for when No Mercy starts (if that was supposed to be Zoey and Louis meeting up for the first time, and then they'll meet Bill and Francis shortly thereafter).

But wait... in the L4D intro movie, they all have primaries... ack, whatever. Heh.

Re: the L4D2 boycott: I understand it, I would prefer they wait a little longer than 363 days in between the original and the sequel, too (and hell, release some HL2:ep3 and Portal 2 in the meantime, also! Where the heck are they? ;_;), but I'm not gonna outright boycott it. I got L4D1 as a Christmas present, much as I got the Orange Box for my birthday a year ago, but IIRC it was $5 off on amazon.com, meaning $45. There's no way I'm gonna pay over say $30 for L4D2, so I'll just wait till Valve puts it down to 50% off in one of their huge megasales.

Geez...

Well okay, big review, big response:

I see you are a steam fan. I am a steam fan too lol. Thank you for your appreciation of my style. It pains me when people lump me together with the dozens of stick films blammed each day. There truly is a right way and a wrong way to do absolutly anything in life lol.

Right, Louis dropped the M-16 because he's out of ammo. If I was shooting for realism, not only would he not have dropped it, he would not have been physically capable of doing so. Then again, Blue soldier should not have been able to kill the blue spy in meet the spy... Another reason to Louis' dropping his gun, aside from the fact that he has a Tier 1 weapon in the start video, is that I didn't want to animate him with the rifle on his back for the rest of the animation lol. I can make a pistol pop out of no where, but not a rifle. Finally, the dropping of his weapon is just a show of panic... If I didn't have him drop his weapon in panic, I'd have to try to make it blatantly obvious to my audience that he was out of ammo to justify why he didn't use it for the rest of the flash.

Yeah, I don't intend on getting L4D2 unless it's either: A. Such an improvement from L4D1 it doesn't even resemble the old game, IE it could never have been done with L4D1. or B. It's no more than, oh say, 25 bucks for me to purchase.

At any rate, glad you liked the movie. Keep questioning everything in life man!

spies came out of water

"Zekey sappin' mah spy! [750.6]"

date: February 25, 2009

It's pretty rare I'm on top of the portal enough to see a ZSL flash when it's fresh, but amazingly I have... and amazingly, it's about TF2, the very thing consuming much of my time and keeping me away from the Portal/NG in general since June 2008, which is when I got the Orange Box. #;-}>

Loved it. It was like a surreal Ren&Stimpy version of 2fort dramas mixed with a weird Coldplay song I've never heard before. Loved the slow motion SG sappin', engie backstabbin', and nade/rocket/baseball dodgin'... ENGIEVENGE, as I like to call it, was then attained. Man, next time I play 2fort, I'll think of the true drama at hand. The crazy and lonely-looking demo dumping stickies in the sewer pipes.... the soldier alertly alerting folks to spyification... the multiple pyros running around with their flare guns out instead of their flamethrowers... and the spies giving out TREACHEROUS HUGS.

The really funny part is that engie probably accepted a hug from an engie with HIS USERNAME. Poor, dumb engie. "Cause they're all spies...."

US Senate doesn't care

"Ah, my old friend JujubeLock [751.4]"

date: December 30, 2008

I remember the old glory days of HNT, and though I don't see every flash you make or take part in a collab for... I do see your name grace the portal entries I happen to watch every now and then (way down from a few years ago, alas).

But this? Ah, this is a masterpiece to make me nostalgic for those old days.

I used to play this song and others at my college radio station, the Wesley Willis alone is total win. And I was just reading an article from GoogleNews about the plight of the 71 year old black dude the Illinois legislature and the US Senate democrats are both pre-judging. Simply sad.

Of course, it could be that ol' Blago didn't mention this guy's name during any of the federally wiretapped phone calls just so he could then appoint him and get some kickback and somehow be above suspicion... but then that would mean he knew he was being taped and... yeah, why not just avoid saying the things he said then, eh?

So this dude looks clean to me. Plus, he's SEVENTY-FREAKING-ONE. He'll be dead soon, he isn't looking to get elected to multiple terms, he'll just serve this partial term and then the next election can give someone else a turn, most likely.

Chicago Politics taking itself too seriously FTL. ROCK OVER LONDON, ROCK ON CHICAGO.

Oh, but just as an aside... does anyone besides Wesley think people flock to McDonalds to... "rock out"? O_O They will indeed put pounds on you there, though. :::nods::: More of a Wendy's guy myself.

December 30, 2008

Author's Response:

Ah, gfoxcook, how I missed your reviews.

Yeah, I feel bad for this guy who just got appointed. I read how some people couldn't imagine why such a reputable person would accept an appointment from Blagojevich, but when it comes down to it, I think it was his last chance at reaching a high point in his political career. The guy hasn't served in an elected position since 1995, 13 years ago, and he was beat in a Democratic primary against one of the slimiest politicians of the decade. So what is this poor guy to do? He can't win governorship or the U.S. senate seat because he is too clean to play the games, so he accepts a gift from a foe of his that he knows will be controversial, but thinks his reputation will overcome it. However, never underestimate how many terms someone can serve, don't forget Strom Thurmond. Didn't Strom die at like 100 while serving in the U.S. Senate? Though, I do agree this is likely going to be the only term this guy would serve and it would allow him to have that couple years of esteemed glory. At this point, who is really going to be willing to run in a special election to serve as a U.S. senator for only a year?

Wesley Willis RIP

I used to be a Wendy's man myself, but I had to step out of that because it isn't particularly healthy. Particularly when combined with the lack of exercise one gets when participating in a JD/MBA program.

Christmas chaos(Miked21)

"I did kill all the zombies... [750.5]"

date: December 23, 2008

... but that's the problem. I had clicked the save game option a couple times before buying guns between levels so I could resume from there if I died midlevel, which I did once. Problem was, when I resumed, or if I closed the game window and reloaded it later, it would load the same level I was on, only I'd have more money than I had when I first started that level and clicked save... plus I'd have less ammo than I should have had. It was saving my game from the moment I died/closed the window.

Which wouldn't be all that much of a problem except on the final level, the "kill 50 zombies" level, I wiped out all 50, but couldn't reach an end to the level. There was a snowy ledge that was impossible to jump onto at the right of a long, low plain... and I figured "oh, okay. No real "end of game," that's fine."

So then I reloaded the game window and it put me at the start of that final level, with less ammo, more money, etc... same deal... and there's no way for me to start over.

I'd really like to try the two weapons I didn't buy the first time through, and play it from the start again, as it's a very enjoyable Santa-shoots-zombies game, but... I can't. I even switched from Opera to Firefox to see if it was a browser cookie you were using... nope, it still put me on the final level. You must have it tied to IP or something.

Please fix this, either give us an option in the Options menu to delete save info, or... just fix the way it works, I guess.

That said, it only slightly mars the experience of blasting zombies. I found that the machine guns (though I didn't try the final one) were a bit lacking, as not only did they need twice as many or more bullets to kill each individual zombie, but they were so inaccurate as to require even more. They were good against one or two zombies from the same direction... and there was way too much ammo for 'em.

The shotguns were a joy. The M3 was an early effective weapon, the SPAS was surprisingly... not much better than the M3, and ammo was scarce... but just as in Far Cry 2, nothing beats the USAS-12 up close. EXCELLENT auto-firing shotty action. Love it! Well done with the gun animations, too, and the shell casing ejections and all. Plz to fix the saves. ;_;

[ss] Rascist Dragon

"None of your reviewers seem to know of... [751.3]"

date: November 28, 2008

... Flight of the Conchords. Oh well.... I'm a big fan of their first season of HBO goodness, and Albi's in my top 3 bits of theirs along with the Bowie Song and Robots (Humans Are Dead) and whatnot, so... bravo for excellent audio choice (though you need to CREDIT it...).

However, while I won't rate you down as heavily as some of these uncomedic mother 'uckers 'uckin' with your shi' (another FOTC joke, you foolios), I can't give you superprops for two reasons:

A) you cut the song/bit off way too early. If this was because you didn't feel like animating past that part, then fair enough. If it was because you thought the bit was better ending there than going through to the end... no no no no.

B) Hitler dragon as Albi is fun and all, but when it came to the badly-disfigerred-by-burnination Albanian boy (and his strange Nazi-Youth-like costume)... you just had him running around with Albi Hitler and.... that's it. No burnination aftermath, no... anything that most Albi flashes show for that scene.

In fact, if there's one good thing about A, it's that I didn't have to see a similarly underwhelming lack of much going on (to B) for the rainbow tear jellybean scene later in the bit, since you cut it off before then.

That said, you still deserve points for taste and for broadcasting the FOTC word to the uneducated masses, even if they're too dense to get FOTC humour. KUDOS for that.
